Protecting Critical Infrastructure

Securing SCADA networks, Smart Grids and other critical infrastructures has become a national mandate. Certes Networks is helping utility companies across the U.S. and abroad ensure these systems, and the data that traverses them, are secure. Using TrustNet, our powerful but easy to manage group encryption solution, you can ensure the reliability and integrity of your infrastructure. TrustNet allows you to secure your control data without compromising on performance.

Using our high speed, low-latency network encryption solutions utility providers can secure their proprietary data with both AES 256 encryption and persistent authentication. This powerful combination of data confidentiality and integrity ensures that control commands cannot be viewed or modified by unauthorized parties.

Complying with Federal and industry regulations doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. TrustNet and our FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validated encryption appliances provide organizations the ability to secure networks, achieve regulatory compliance, and reduce the cost of deploying, managing and maintaining an encrypted network.

A rapidly growing list of local, regional, and national utility companies are now using Certes Networks' SCADA encryption solutions to protect the networks that control their critical infrastructure. You can read about the latest SCADA wins here. (link to below)

Low Latency Performance for Smart Grid

This solution is also ideally suited for the Smart Grid, which is not just a flow of electricity, but is also a flow of information. Certes TrustNet Manager is the only encryption solution that can secure the various communication technologies at different OSI layers used to transmit critical information for power grid monitoring and control.

TrustNet ensures the reliable and continuous supply of electricity, and is the only solution that meets both the security and performance needs of Smart Grid.

SCADA Security Use Case

Click to open larger diagram

Problem:
A regional utility provider needed to encrypt sensitive power generation and other control data between main control stations and multiple disaster recovery sites to comply with NERC requirements. Their three main concerns were:

1. Security could not impede the real-time nature of their data flows
2. Encryption could not impact the performance of their proprietary control software
3. Their control network is Ethernet only, so the solution needed to operate at Layer 2

Solution:
Certes Networks gigabit encryption appliances deployed at each disaster recovery site and the main control station using Layer 2 encryption.

Benefits:
  • Control traffic secured without impacting proprietary software
  • No delay added to data flows
  • No network changes or upgrades needed
